Two Tiny Hummers

Once there was a tiny nest with two tiny eggs inside.

The mother of these eggs watched after these eggs carefully and kept them warm. Finally her hard work was paid off and the tiny eggs hatched. Two tiny baby hummingbirds emerged into the big
world.

And the little birds grew

 And grew

And grew a little more

Bigger

And bigger!

Then things started to get a little crowded in that little nest of theirs

Really crowded

So one of the two tiny birds decided to leave the nest and make his own way in the world

The one that stayed behind got lonely in that little nest all by himself, so he left too.

The little nest was now empty. But there is an interesting thing about mother hummingbirds. They sometimes use their nest again. :)

So there you have it. The story of the little hummers in my backyard. And guess who I saw at the hummingbird feeder I just put up?

Hummingbird Hullabaloo

Something amazing happened recently. I discovered a tiny hummingbird nest in my backyard! As most of you can already tell by my choice of background for my blog, I really like hummingbirds. I'll tell you how I discovered the nest. I was walking back around in the little grove of trees behind my house when I heard the hum of a hummingbird nearby. I looked up and sure enough there was a little one hovering right above my head. It was acting really strange though. Instead of zipping away once it saw me, it dove in closer. It kept doing that over and over, going up high and then diving down. Then it suddenly hit me, (an idea not the bird.) It was probably protecting it's nest! I've seen other birds do that and have actually been pecked on the head by a mother swallow when I walked too close to her nest. I decided to look around and see if I could spot the nest. I saw it right away, attached to a low branch. It looked like the nest was made of spiderwebs at first, but when I got closer I saw it was actually made of cotton.
We have some cotton trees that shed cotton like crazy in the summer, and I guess the hummingbird thought it would make good nest materials.

This is about how big it is compared to my hand. So tiny!

Anyway, I got closer and looked inside and guess what I saw?

Two tiny little eggs! They were about the size of jelly beans! Seriously they were so small! I went home and told my family. We looked up how long it takes for hummingbirds to hatch. I was surprised about how little time it takes. Only about two weeks! So I visited the nest daily, always with my phone ready. They hatched only about a week and a couple days after I found the nest. That means I found the nest pretty soon after the mother hummingbird laid the eggs. Here are some pictures of the babies. They are a little weird looking when they are really young, but kind of cute in an ugly way.

I know it's kind of hard to see them. The fluffy
stuff is one's back and then on top of that is his
head, and the other one is kind of squished on
the other side.

I will post again when they are a little older. Stay tuned for more cuteness!

Update

I haven't posted for a while so here's a quick update. I recently turned 13! I got breakfast in bed, (crepes with strawberries and raspberries) many amazing gifts including a bow and arrow, and a chocolate cake with chocolate strawberries on top! Rosalie gave me a very nice gift with a card she made herself.

I just love the random f in the middle of my name.

And here is the lovely cake

Anyway, it was was a really fun birthday and I so glad to finally be an official teenager!

Sibling Spotlight

I'm going to do a post about a sibling every so often. I think I'll start with Rosie. There are so many things I like about Rosie. She is pretty crazy. Here I'll list some reasons.

Exhibit A
She dresses in crazy outfits

Exhibit B
She draws crazy pictures

This is Rapunzel. The long yellow things are her braids
This is a drawing of Rosie doing a handstand in the grass.

This is a letter to Grandma Ferguson.

This is her drawing a reindeer.

This is her on a stage ready to preform

This is a princess version of her.

This is one of my favorites. It's a fairy. I just love the layered

skirts and the flowers in her hair. The rain is also cool.

She drew this on the same day as the fairy. It's a little less fancy

but still adorable.

 And Exhibit C
She sings every day and makes up crazy songs

All in all, she's a crazy, fun, adorable little girl

Car Camping

My little sister Rosie was put outside when she was noisy during the prayer for dinner. She was put out on our patio, and there is a door out there that you can get into our garage through. She opened the door and went inside. We continued eating dinner, until my mom decided to go check on her to see if she wanted to come back inside to eat. She went into the garage, and came back with a big smile on her face. "She's curled up in the cat bed." It seems that Rosalie had gotten cold and had pulled the cat out of her bed and curled up in there instead. Poor cat.

We ate for a while longer before we went to check on her again. Mom and I peeked back into the garage but Rosie was not in the cat bed anymore. We looked all over the house, she was nowhere. We came back to the table where Dad was still eating, and he said "Have you looked in the car?" I went out to look, and sure enough there was Rosie all huddled up in the corner of the car. I guess the cat bed wasn't warm enough. I opened the door and tried to convince her to come in to eat, this is kind of how our conversation went.

"Do you want to come in and eat?"
"I'm never going to go back in the house ever again!"
"What are you going to do when it gets dark?"
"I'm gonna sleep in the car."
"Won't you get cold?"
"I'll get my pillow and blanket to sleep."
"I thought you said you were never going to go back in the house again."
"I'll go in the night and get 'em."

I didn't know what to say so I started to leave. She said "Wait! I meed you to stay!" (She always says need, "meed")

"Why?""I'll be all alone. You meed to stay and sleep here too."
"If I sleep in the car with you, will you come and eat dinner?"
"Yep."

So that night Rosalie and I slept in the car. Meredith saw us going out, and said "I want to come!" I asked her why she wanted to and she said in an exasperated tone, " 'Cause, it's super fun to sleep in a weird place.

She was right, it was fun. We folded back the seats and put blankets underneath us as cushions. I told them a beautiful story about a family of raccoons, (I'm a pretty good story teller. In fact, the other day Chloe said, "Lissa! Can you come babysit us and tell a story?") and except for the crick in my neck when I woke up, it was a fun night.

Baby Brown Blessing

My cousin Katie Brown recently had her first baby. His name is Ethan and he is adorable. They had his blessing just one week after he was born because their uncle was in town and was about to leave. They wanted him to be able to come too, so they had an early baby blessing. After going to their sacrament meeting for the blessing, we went over to their house. We ate a delicious dinner, and cooed over the new baby for a while. Then Hannah, Anderson, and I went down into the woods. The Pulsiphers's backyard goes down into some amazing woods with tiny little flowers along a path that leads to a huge river. The river is scary because it is not ground level. The river is clear down in a huge ravine. We had to go and keep the little adventurous toddlers away from it because it would be really easy to slip and fall in. While we were watching the kids, Hannah and I started to gather some of the tiny flowers. We started being chefs and made soup and desserts out of the flowers and other plants. Anderson and the Cresap boys joined in and gathered flowers and plants and brought them to us.(It was really cute because they were pretending to be soldiers and were like "O.K. men they need more yellow flowers, move out! Get those flowers at all costs.") I came out to bring more plants for the "soup" we were making when I found a small snail shell. I put a tiny purple flower in it and called it a tart. Then while Anderson was looking for certain kind of flower we had requested, he stumbled on a huge jackpot of snail shells! He brought about twenty over to the table. Hannah and I set to work and soon made tons of little "tarts". It was a lot of fun. Here are some pictures that I took with my phone.

And here is cute and adorable baby Ethan!
